Special Educational Needs
At Thornton Primary School we are passionately ambitious for all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities so all children achieve their full potential. To do this, we make sure that all children have access to a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum.
We focus on Quality First Teaching; ensuring that pupils' needs are met in the classroom, with their classmates, wherever possible. We make sure that children attain the basic standards of English and maths which are essential in every day life.
We meet any needs swiftly, through a range of early identification and assessment, for example, carry out speech and language assessments in the Autumn term of Reception year as well as carrying out a range of other assessments including for social, emotional and mental health throughout a child's life at Thornton.
Where a child is identified as having an additional need we will work together as a team - school, pupil and parents - to set clear targets and follow the assess, plan, do, review cycle.
We know that any child might have additional educational needs at any point in their school life, be it Social Emotional Mental Health, Physical or an identification of another need; however through our range of staff training, identification of need and clear targets we ensure that all children make good progress throughout their time at Wilsden.
