Safeguarding/Child Protection

Safeguarding At Thornton Primary School

At Thornton Primary School, the health, safety and welfare of all our pupils is our top priority and is of paramount importance to all the adults who work here no matter what their role. Our children have the right to protection – regardless of age, gender, race, culture or disability. They have a right to be safe in our school and we do all that we can to ensure that they are!

The school is required to have rigorous policies and procedures in place to safeguard children. The school has several members of staff who have undertaken specialist training and take on the roles of Designated Senior Leader (i.e. to deal with safeguarding and child protection concerns).

Safeguarding Leaders:

In our school the following members of staff are fully trained to safeguard your child.

Designated Safeguarding Leader (DSL): Mrs F Ayub – Head of School

Mrs Ayub takes overall responsibility for the safeguarding of the pupils at Thornton.

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leaders: (DDSLS)

  • Mrs E Davison – Executive Head of School (Covers all areas of safeguarding)
  • Mrs H Rhodes –Pastoral Leader– (working with our families and community)
  • Mr C Gilmour - Assistant Headteacher
  • Mrs V Wood - Assistant Headteacher
  • Ms C Bradley – SENCO (Covers SEND pupils and Inclusion)
  • Mrs A Karamat – EYFS Leader (Covers EYFS Pupils/Supervisions in EYFS)
  • Mrs L Connor – Lead Teacher (SEMH Resourced Provision)

It may be helpful to know that the law places a duty on the Executive Headteacher and Head of School and their staff to report any obvious signs or suspected cases of child abuse, which include non-accidental injury, neglect, emotional abuse and/or sexual abuse. The procedures are intended to protect children at risk and all schools and schools nationally are expected to take the attitude that where there are grounds for concern it is better to be safe than sorry. This does mean that the staff risks upsetting some parents/carers by reporting a case which, on investigation, proves unfounded. In such circumstances, it is hoped that parents and carers would accept that the staff acted in what were believed to be, in the best interests of the child. Keeping Children Safe in Education All staff have training on the revised Keeping children safe in education annually. This is the main document on which our policy and training is based.
